Amateur-Owner/Trainer-Exhibitor
Joanne Anderson

Preparing horses for the show ring is not easy.    It takes commitment, dedication and time.   Regardless if you are preparing one or seven horses.   Although I can tell you from experience that working to prepare 7 horses for the show ring takes a lot of time and effort... not to mention patience.

I am just one of many dedicated souls that happens to enjoy turning out a horse that they have trained and conditioned themselves to exhibit.

If you also exhibit in Open, you need to be prepared to compete against some of the top trainers in the nation.

Conditioning and training a horse for the show ring does not just mean exercising them.  It means teaching them to stand in position and also be alert when asked. It also requires a proper diet and taking the time to learn proper grooming techniques to show off your horses' best features.

Liberty is one of my favorite classes.  I think its the least stressful class and I enjoy taking the time in picking just the right music for each horse. : )

ADVICE:   Start with a quality horse; Don't bite off more than you can chew; and be prepared to dedicate the necessary time to train the horse to be prepared come show time.

Happy Showing!
Joanne

SHARING THOUGHTS AND INSPIRATIONS

Showing your own halter horse definitely has its challenges and tribulations. Doing it all yourself also has its great rewards and feeling of self accomplishment and pride.  Sure it may be nice to just be handed your fully groomed and gooped horse ring side by your trainer and simply walk in the ring and show, but there's just something about knowing that you by yourself spent the time to condition, train, clip, groom and have your horse ready to be presented to the judges and walk out of the ring with that neck ribbon!

Its ridiculous for a judge to really believe that a trainer deserves more than an amateur, owner exhibitor...  that second look or consideration.  Besides the fact that a judge should only be judging the merits of the horse, not whose holding onto the lead, but to assume that the owner/amateur handler doesn't deserve the same consideration???   Hmmmm.

I once read in a posting from a well known breeder/trainer/handler, that will remain unnamed, that the reason the trainers deserve the second look or more consideration is because that is their livelihood.  That they put out all that money to do their job.   I call Horse Poop on that comment!  Who do they think gets CHARGED for all those expenses?  When I spent the amount of time and investment that I have in order to show my horses competitively myself, I not only think I deserve just as much consideration, but I demand it!

I have on occasion handed off a horse to a trainer to show for me.  I have no problem doing that if I feel the horse would show better and I'm not saying there isn't a need for trainers.  Of course there is.  There are some horses that just show better for someone else besides mom.... but guess what... I still was the one that conditioned, trained and groomed that horse.

Due to time constraints and lack of knowledge to do so, I do not train or start driving horses.  I so admire amateurs that do train their own driving horses.... BRAVO... KUDOS'!!  That is a whole new ball game.   Hunter I've done and at some point will try my hand halter obstacle. : )   Again, its more of a time, or rather lack of time issue.

So, I guess if I'd like to share anything is that if you want to show your own horse or finances dictate that you have to.... By all means GO FOR IT! But be prepared to put in your time, if you want to be successful.  Make a commitment and stick to it.

HAPPY SHOWING!

JOANNE
